Professor Ren is a Fellow of The Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, a Professor of The University of Tokushima, a Director of the Department of Information in The University of Tokushima, a Chang Jiang Scholar Endowed Chair Professor of the Chinese Ministry of Education, a winner of the Chinese Academy of Science Fund for Distinguished Overseas Young Scholars, an evaluation expert of The Okawa Foundation for Information and Telecommunications, an overseas senior advisor of the China Science and Technology Association, an evaluation experts of Chang Jiang Scholar of the Chinese Ministry of Education, an expert of the HOME (Help Our Motherland through Elite Intellectual Resources from Overseas) Program, an overseas academic committee of the Institute of Automation Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an academic committee of the State Key Laboratory of Networking and Switching Technology in China.

In November 2009, Professor Ren was selected as the first Fellow of the The Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, as the only Chinese scholar among the 36 first Fellows. The Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, which was founded in November 1978, with currently 101 scientific societies and associations and over 65 million members, commends scientists of outstanding scientific contributions and prominent technical achievements from different research areas of science in Japan. Together with the Nobel winner Charles Kuen Kao and the US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Professor Ren has been ranked in the top three of the "2009 Global Chinese top ten newsmakers" by 150 global medias.

Professor Ren is focusing on the researches of 1. Natural Language Processing, Multi-Lingual Machine Translation, and Information Retrieval; 2. Large-Scale Knowledge Acquisition and Man-Machine Conversation; 3. Affective Computing and Intelligent Robot. The applicant has published over 50 SCI journal papers in the recent 5 years (2006-2010), and has published a number of top-level international conference papers, including COLING, ICASSP, EMNLP, and INTERSPEECH. The applicant has served as the chair of the IEEE international conferences as well as the chief editor and associate editor of international academic journals for many times. The applicant has organized and co-organized more than 30 international conferences, and has served as the general chair for 5 times, the organizing committee chair for 3 times, the program committee chair for 6 times. The applicant has hosted 11 Japanese national research projects, and has participated in 11 research projects as the chief scientist, with a total research funding of 341,250,000 Japanese Yen.

At the forefront of the international research, Professor Ren has been recognized in the academic society as "the first person" in Japanese-Chinese machine translation, a pioneer in "mental state transition network based emotion recognition and emotion creation", and the founder of the IEEE Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Engineering. His major scientific and technological innovations include: 1. the proposal of a "family model" (also known as the "Chinese people model"), which has opened the field of parallel processing in Natural Language Processing and Machine Translation, and has led to the world's first Japanese-Chinese Machine Translation System "Sun Wukong"; the proposal of a "super function" theory for Natural Language Processing, which has been widely employed in voice recognition and image processing fields, and has earned the Japanese "Kanraku" award; 2. the proposal of a "Multi-Lingual, Multi-Function, Multi-Media Intelligent System" concept in his invited lecture in France 1999, which has aroused strong repercussions in the Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence fields, and has earned the IEEE best paper award; the development of an intelligent interactive media "CAIWA Channel", which has earned the Japan gold design award in 2008; 3. the development of a large scale Chinese Emotion Corpus Ren-CECps, which has been employed for research in 156 universities and research institutes in Japan, China, Singapore, and America, as the most widely researched emotion corpus; the proposed "mental state transition network" has reached the world's leading level in the emotion recognition field (IEEE Institute Special Report: Prof. Fuji Ren, Communications Expert Receives Gennai Prize, 2005), and has earned the IEEE and ICAI international conference best paper award as well as the Japan natural science award "Gennai Prize". Professor Ren has accumulated a wealth of experience in team management. For a long time, he has served as the director of the Department of Intelligent Information Engineering in The University of Tokushima (2006-2010) and the director of the Department of Information in the University of Tokushima (2010-Present), the latter of which is consisted of three old departments including the Intelligent Information Engineering department in The University of Tokushima.
